13.11.16 Fire damages Amazon warehouse in Rugeley, Staffordshire.

Two people have been arrested after a fire at one of Amazon's main UK distribution centres, police have confirmed.

The fire spread through the 700,000 square foot depot in Rugeley on Sunday 13th November 2016.  Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

An Amazon spokesman said up to 1,000 workers were evacuated from the building, but none were injured.

Staffordshire Police said it was treating the fire as arson.

There was damage to some racking and the internet retailer's stock - mainly clothing.

Cannock fire station manager Tim Hollingworth said the cause was being investigated.

A spokesman said a 19-year-old from Birmingham was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, and bailed until February next year.

A 21-year-old from Wednesbury arrested on Monday remains in custody.

An Amazon spokesman said the company can have up to 1,000 staff in the building at any one time.
