28.7.16 Two schoolboys arrested over Basingstoke church fire

Two schoolboys have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a blaze tore through the roof of a catholic church in Basingstoke.

More than 30 fire fighters rushed to the scene to find billowing smoke pouring from St Joseph's Catholic Church in St Michael's Road.

Fire fighters were able to surround the fire and prevent serious damage, but part of the church roof was damaged.

Investigators believe the blaze started in a nearby garden shed before spreading to the religious building.

Nobody was inside the church at the time and no one was injured.

Two teenage boys, aged 13 and 14 years, were arrested on suspicion of arson and later released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that a joint fire and police investigation will begin to establish the cause of the fire.

The church will remain sealed off while investigators continue to look into the exact cause of the fire.
