An elderly man was taken to hospital after a fire in his flat in Southampton.

The pensioner was rescued by fire fighters who rushed to the blaze in the city centre.

Fire fighters from St Mary's station needed to break into the home after the blaze started before a colleague from Redbridge station rescued the man from the flat.

The fire started when a chip pan caught fire in the fourth floor flat.

Emergency services were alerted and four fire crews from St Mary's, Hightown and Redbridge were called out.

South Central ambulance was called and paramedics treated the pensioner, who has not been named, for smoke inhalation.

He was then taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.
