18.5.16 Fire breaks out at Primary School in Carshalton

Four fire engines and 21 fire fighters and officers were called to the fire in the school building whilst it was under construction on Harbury Road in Carshalton.

Part of the first floor of the two storey building was damaged by the fire.  Thankfully there were no injuries and 100 pupils and staff safely evacuated the school before the Brigade arrived.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “The fire started in a space between the ground and first floor in a part of the building that is under construction.”

A Sutton Council spokesman confirmed that all children had been accounted for and that the school would be closed until Monday, May 23rd.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A spokesman for Sutton Council stated that the Fire Brigade has extinguished the fire and fire fighters are assessing the extent of the damage to the timber-frame building.  The fire has not been extensive, but smoke and fire damage has affected some classrooms, which will require repair.   We are expecting that the school will reopen, subject to further inspection of fire damage by the Fire Brigade and testing of alarms.
