3.2.2016 Landlord fined £12k for breaches of safety rules


Stockport company guilty of 11 offences

1- A Stockport landlord has been ordered to pay £12,400 in fines after breaching safety regulations at one of their properties.

2 - Beckhall Properties Ltd was charged with 11 offences related to     safety at the property, a building of self-contained flats, after a complaint received by the local council prompted an inspection. 

3- When council officers arrived at the property they found a number of management regulation breaches, including a defective fire alarm, faulty fire extinguishers and a fire door that did not meet regulations.  The stairs of the property were also in a dangerous condition whilst there was no safety certificate for the building’s electrics.

4 - Beckhall Properties is required to meet management regulations for their building - which is converted into self-contained flats - under Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) legislation. The regulations ensure minimum safety standards are maintained including fire safety and gas safety.

5 - The city council invited Beckhall Properties Ltd to an interview under caution to discuss the areas of concern, but they received no response.

6 - Councillor Bernard Priest, deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said “We take the issue of tenant safety extremely seriously and the size of the punishment shows the court shares our concern.  Let this action send a message to any unscrupulous landlords – who may be considering neglecting their legal obligations – that we will not hesitate to prosecute.”

7 -The pr operty company has been ordered to pay £12,400 to Manchester City Council after breaching safety regulations.

8 - Beckhall Properties Ltd, of Lower Hillgate, Stockport, was fined a total of £11,000 for 11 separate offences at a court hearing.

9 - The company was also ordered to pay the council’s court costs of £1,280, along with a victim of crime surcharge of £120.

10 - Representatives of Beckhall Properties failed to appear in court and the case was proved in their absence.
